The basement stairs…hmmm….what to do with those ugly original basement stairs! Finishing off the basement steps for a lot of folks can be intimidating! They are most of the time, a very “rickety” set of not so attractive steps that lead into the unfinished part of your house…the basement!
But, the good news is…there are many simple fixes and cool solutions for turning this old set of stairs into a beautiful and multi-functional addition to your new finished space!
One such solution is turning some of that “wasted” space under the stairs into some usable built-in’s! The possibilities are many for your style of built-in as well. You could create built-in:
- TV Built-in
- Stereo/Component Rack
- Art Niche w/ light
- Closet spaces w/ side or rear door access
Also, if your steps are “flimsy” and a little shaky and without side walls to support them, it’s very easy to re-support the existing steps to the basement by simply framing a new 2″ x 4″ wall on each side of the steps and then securing the existing stair “stringers” to the newly built stairway walls! This stiffens-up the whole staircase really well and takes the “bounce” out of staircase!
A lot of folks ask “Eddie should we tear-out the existing steps and build a new set of steps?” Most of the time The existing staircase can be modified and strengthened and made to work just fine for the basement finishing project. Very rarely have I ever had to remove an existing set of basement steps completely and replace them with a new set of stairs.
So embrace your existing set of basement steps! There are many useful and creative ways to make that old set of steps a sturdy, very attractive and useful addition to the new basement living space!
